Reading beyond the bubble

When I first started writing this newsletter, I had the idea that I’d review some of the novels serialized on the Substack platform alongside traditionally published books. But when I’m reading online, my mind resembles a parrot fish at night. It covers itself in an invisible mucus bubble to protect it from anything that would get its hooks in without my full consent to interact. Chopped up into dozens of mobile-friendly pieces, even if they have little recaps and reminders built into the design, I have found a longer work cannot pierce my bubble.
