I have become very particular about purchasing physical books, so the ones I own, I consider keepsakes and irreplaceable, So I am not an easy lender - I have to really trust I will get it back in the same shape. I am, however, an excellent book gifter. If a book speaks to me and I want to share it with someone, I just send them a copy.
Purging books happens every summer and is mainly focused on the kids and they take part in it. I have a much easier time gifting to friends that I know will be thankful and enjoy than taking to somewhere like goodwill or the resale store - but the kids like that because they can earn money for more books.
I honestly don’t know if I would like to be a genius on any one subject. I’d like to know everything about certain random things but that isn’t the same - I’ll have to think on it!
Love your discipline and intention Cori! I do donate a lot to Friends of the Library (and buy from their sales) and that feels good, but I hear you on wanting to rehome with care— almost as if books were pets!
Yes! And also, and yes I know this is weird, that I have this idea that really special books are memory keepers of sorts, so it’s almost like in giving that book away, it’s like giving a piece of yourself away, so it needs to be worth it. Like, my copy of Anne of Green Gables, which was my mother’s and I remember her giving me and telling me how it was her favorite growing up one. Light when I couldn’t sleep, I could never part with. If I had to replace it, it would t be as special. But also clearly, this “logic” doesn’t apply to every book. Thank goodness, lol!
I love my books too and am inspired by your process of rehousing some of them. Your writings are always so thoughtful and compel me to continue adding more reading time to my day. It feels comforting for now, until I am ready to begin the fight against injustice again.

Also, I have never re-homed a pet. 😂. Your reverence for books is sweet. Love that story about your mom and Anne of Green Gables.

Hi Mary! Thanks so much for chiming in. Yes, here we go— time to show up and speak up… still, again.
Thanks for putting The Last Samurai on my radar. It sounds so good.
It was really worth it, Andrea. I’m not sure what took me so long to commit to it, but it’s among my top reads this year. Hope you enjoy it.
Thank you! I love that novel so much.
It is so good!
