Thank you for the shoutout, Abra! I’m excited about the S&S film release - and I think it looks promising! As with almost any Austen adaptation, the deeper themes of the novel will seem trivialized (as they are already reduced to those sentimental taglines you mentioned), BUT I think there’ll be a lot of the things we love: great acting, gorgeous sets and scenery, provocative design choices that will spark Janeite debates, and most importantly brilliant dialogue, because that part is Actual Austen. Looking forward to the anticipations and the conversations we’ll all be having around this film!
If I’d guess, this was a marketing driven brief. The covers will stand out from a sea of bright colored big type covers. Maybe that was the intent. But getting a look doesn’t automatically turn into a buy.
I think the film looks promising and I will definitely watch even though I agree with Natasha that it’s totally unnecessary. The 1995 Ang Lee version is probably my all-time favorite Austen adaptation! But I have to say the taglines worry me. “No one knows your heart like a sister” and “being agreeable never did a woman any good” almost seem antithetical to the plot and themes of this book. Maybe they’re just marketing material though and not indicative of what the movie is going for? I will say I’m all for a film that emphasizes the sister relationship! But a big part of the novel is that the sisters are in the dark about each other’s inner lives and romantic situations!
Oh! I had not seen that second tagline. That does seem concerning. And yes. While even in the novel I do think their differences are known to each other, even if they don't always comprehend each other and the Elinor is uneasy with Marianne's less sensible approach to life and love, there are some important secrets I hope the film would not spoil too early!
Oh gosh I wish I knew! My current ideas for myself involve a bookseller's guide for indie authors, and of course why modern publishing is good actually.
