As you might imagine, I could talk about book festival stuff all day— and most days I do! It was fun to do it this morning with Andrea Bartz: Get It Write, a great newsletter companion for authors trying to navigate all the ways their work gets into the world and their books get noticed. Though I am not an author, I have gotten a lot of new thoughts about how to support them from reading her content and lurking around her audience comments. It’s great and you should check it out if you are an author or are doing other things in life to elevate literature.
Thank you, Andrea Bartz, for having me on and helping demystify:
What a book festival has in common with a bumblebee
How planners decide which authors to invite— it’s not a competition!
What makes a book festival different from, and complementary to, solo events at bookstores
How to “give good book festival”— and how to find out which ones are good
Some things to consider if you are thinking of starting your own book fest
While this session is definitely more geared toward authors than readers, anyone who attends or has wondered about what goes on at a book festival might find it interesting to think about everything that goes into an event like this and all the considerations on authors’ minds when they come out to feel the love from readers in their audience.
Thanks to Alyson Mosquera Dutemple, Books on GIF, Kathleen Schmidt, Fisher, Sarah Lavender Smith and everyone else who attended.
Cheers,
Abra
